Many Arab and international celebrities were present as the third edition of the Red Sea Film Festival got underway this week. The Red Sea: Honoree Award was given to India’s Ranveer Singh, who was hailed as “an all-around creative genius” by Sharon Stone. Ranveer made the highly contentious political decision to openly express his admiration for Johnny Depp, who was present, during his acceptance speech.
“It was an exciting pleasure to meet Ranveer earlier; what a wonderful man.” The star of Basic Instinct said, “It gives me true, great pleasure to welcome him to the stage to receive yet another prestigious award.” As he stepped up to take the award, Ranveer appeared genuinely touched. InDue to Depp’s participation in widely reported legal proceedings against his ex-wife Amber Heard, who had accused him of domestic abuse, his career has suffered recently. Depp recently prevailed in a defamation lawsuit against Heard, and he has been gradually regaining his professional composure. His latest movie, Jeanne du Barry, is being shown at the festival.
On the fringes of the festival, which is in its third year since Saudi Arabia opened up to the world this decade, Ranveer talked about taking over the Don franchise from Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan in an interview with Deadline. He expressed his desire to add his personal touch to the “revered franchise” and acknowledged the honor of being selected as their successor. The actor’s most recent appearance was in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, a critical and commercial success.
